Frequent answer questions

How do I get to the libraries?

The accesses section has an icon showing the bus, metro, train and tram routes to each of the libraries. In the directory you will also find the library locations on a plan of Bilbao.

What do I need to use the municipal libraries?

You don't need anything to use the libraries, examine the contents, use the reading rooms or study areas etc. You need a membership card to borrow books or use the Didakteka area (computer centre).

What do I need for a reader's card?

You just need to fill in a form and give us a copy of your identity card or passport. Children under 14 years old need a photocopy of the Family Register and the signature of father, mother or guardian.

What do I have to do if I lose the reader's card?

Inform the library. They will cancel the card so that nobody else can use it in your name.
You have to pay a small fee for the second card. Consult the current official charges.

How many books and other items can I borrow at once?

Adult users can borrow 5 books, 2 children's books, 2 CDs, 2 DVDs and 1 select novelty.
Children can borrow 5 children's books, 2 CDs and 2 DVDs.

How long can I borrow for?

15 days for books, which can be extended for a further 15 days, twice, and 7 days for audiovisual material and select novelties, with no extensions.

How do I know which books and other items I have taken out on loan?

Go to "User information" on the library web site. This shows you the number of items out on loan, return dates, renewals etc.

How can I extend the loans?

Go to   User information   on the library web site, where you can use your card number and password to renew the books you have borrowed.

What happens if I don't return a loan on time?

There is a system of fines. The fines are a period of time during which you can't use the borrowing service.

Where can I get information on the contents of the libraries?

Consult the network catalogue.

How do I know which books belong to which library?

By looking at the location data for each item in the catalogue. Consult the list of locations to match locations with libraries.

Can I order a loan at my library from another library?

Yes, using the internal interlibrary borrowing service. You just have to fill in a form with your details and the book you want. This service is used for books, but you can't borrow audiovisual material.

What do I have to do if I want to take out a book from a library which is not part of the municipal system?

Go to the interlibrary borrowing service at the Central Library in calle Bidebarrieta, where they deal with requests for books, articles etc. from any library in the world. Any expenses incurred - return of the books by registered post, photocopies etc. - are paid by the user. Use this  form  to make your request.

How can I ask the library to buy a book I am interested in?

Fill in the  form  with your details and the book's details.

What happens if I lose a book, a video etc.?

You have to make good the loss by buying another. If it is not on the market, library staff will tell you what to do.

What happens if a library book, a video etc. is stolen?

Go to the library with a photocopy of the police report for the loan to be cancelled. The library will buy another book.

Introduction

The Bilbao Municipal Library Network has provided its web pages with an accessible design, in order to guarantee universal access to the greatest possible number of users.

Rapid-access keys

We have included some keyboard shortcuts to provide rapid access to the various web pages. As a general rule, combining the Alt key with another key (from the list below) will supply us with the specific option.
PCs have an Alt key; Mac computers have an action key (normally next to the space bar) which performs the same function.

  • Direct access to contents: Alt+T
  • Direct access to the navigation bar: Alt+N
  • Direct access to the main menu: Alt+M
  • Direct access to the submenu in a main menu option: Alt +S
  • Direct access to the suggestion box: Alt +W
  • Direct access to the forms on the page: Alt+F

Navigation bar

Users will find most of the basic navigation options on this bar, at the top of the pages.

The navigation bar is situated on the top right-hand side of the page, and it allows users, in this order, to return to the home page, change the colour profile, change the size of the texts on the page, display a list of the entire web page contents, move to this help page, and find the email contact address.

Barra de navegación, completa

Direct access to the main menu: this allows users to skip the navigation bar and language, and move directly to the main menu. This option is separate from the rest, on the left.

Colour profiles

The Bilbao Municipal Library Network web site has an attractive colour-coded design to help users move around the site, and provide a clear view of which section they are in at all times.

However, some users may have difficulty distinguishing certain colour combinations, and they may use a black and white screen, or simply make all pages the same colour. There are a number of profiles for this, ranging from the pre-determined profile for each section, three specific colours and a high-contrast black and white option.

To use a colour profile, simply select it from the tool bar.

Font size

One of the most important characteristics of a web page for any visually, intellectually and technologically challenged user who wishes to access the contents is the ability to adapt the size of the letters to their difficulty.

Normally the visual navigators have their own options to increase or reduce the size of the texts, although others do not have this feature.
If the user's navigator can run the programmes on the pages, the buttons on the navigation bar can increase the text fonts to a size which should be legible.

Printed version of the pages

Each page has a printable version, via the link on the lower section.

The result obtained will depend on the capacities of the operating system and the printer used.
